WWE Heat 1-20-08

WWE Heat 1/20/08

Santino Marella vs. DH Smith
Super Crazy & Hacksaw Duggan vs. The Highlanders

Awesomely surprised at the first half of the Santino Marella/DH Smith match.

*** I started writing this about two months ago. All I remember about this show was that marella was pretty decent in the ring as “Santino”, which goes along with his charisma, and makes him a pretty good candidate for most improved. Everything else sucked. Super Crazy most underated by the WWE. He should be on SD! or ECW.

Good TV show this week, with Regal/Kennedy, Chris jericho, and almost everything else right on point with everything from the matches to the feuds and angles. WWE Backlash 2008

RESULTS:
Matt Hardy defeated Montel Vontavious Porter -US Title **1/4
Kane defeated Chavo Guerrero -ECW World Championship *3/4
The Big Show defeated The Great Khali **
Shawn Michaels defeated Batista -Super Grudge Match ***
Team Phoenix defeated Team James -6 on 6 Divas Match *1/2
The Undertaker defeated Edge -World Heavyweight title ***1/4
HHH defeated Orton & JBL & Cena -WWE Championship ***1/2

Nothing blew me away on this event, although I thought Batista vs. Michaels had alot of potential until the fake injury spot, and it might have been one of the best Batista straight wrestling/non-gimmick matches I have seen. I’m not very hot about the Edge/’Taker matches, not this one or the Wrestlemania 24 match. It’s good but I can watch guys punch each other over and over just so much. The finishe to the 4-way match were good but overall the end of the Age of Orton is a dissapointment. I think Randy is one of the most improved all around wrestlers in the business, and the WWE for sure, but they just keep burying him and make him a basic non-player. He might be heel and they play that up in his character of being a chicken-shit but his ring work says he’s better then that and Edge does a better job in that role than his ex-partner.

I don’t normally recap television unless there’s something good going down but I hope I can find time to throw a quick thought or two out there if my personal time permots. William Regal as King of the Ring sounds like a good idea to me. Why does my heart, however, feel this isn’t going to really go anywhere? Nonetheless, Regal proved again he is one of the most underated in-ring wrestlers in a world wide promotion. His match with Finlay and CM Punk were very short but in those 5-7 minutes they got in some good shit, some stiff shots, and worked a real strong style match. I’ll watch Regal vs. almost anyone of they give him anything in the match.

If you erase the presidential bullshit (except Umaga), the Diva mess, and completely eradicate Holly & Rhodes from those extra brain cells you might need down the line, this was a strong card with a good main event. The right guy got pinned, everyone got their shit in, and it sent us off to Backlash with the right vibe.

All except for John Cena’s promo. What a fucking joke. Is HHH trying to emasculate the guy and make him look like a total lame-ass? Gotta be the deal, because Cena was a promo machine 3-4 years ago and his shit now is garbage.

WWE Wrestlemania XXIV

* March 30, 2008 - Orlando, Florida;

o Kane won a Battle Royal to win an ECW World title shot; *
o John Bradshaw Layfield beat Fit Finlay -Belfast Brawl-; *3/4
o C.M. Punk wins the Money in the Bank Ladder Match; **3/4
o Batista (SD!) beat Umaga (RAW)- Brand Supremecy Match-; *
o Kane defeated Chavo Guerrero in 5 seconds -ECW Title-; DUD/SQUASH
o Shawn Michaels beat Ric Flair -Career Threatening Match-; ****1/4
o Beth & Melina defeated Maria & Ashley -BunnyMania Match-; DUD
o Randy Orton beat John Cena & Triple H -WWE Championship-; ***
o Floyd Mayweather beat The Big Show (Boxer vs. Wrestler); ***
o The Undertaker defeated Edge -World Heavyweight title-; ***

A few weeks late with the Wrestlemania recap/star ratings, but better late then never. Great show, thumbs up, but let’s get some things straight here. MITB was not a blow away match. Taker vs. Edge was passable, but even a three star rating is pretty generous. Floyd Mayweather vs. Big Show was ten times better then I ever thought it could be, from an entertainment standpoint. But in the end, Ric Flair and Shawn Micheals stole the show.

The Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin DVD Review

I am not a Steve Austin expert. I didn’t watch WWE religiously until after WCW died. So I don’t know if the matches on this disc, which include The Rock at Wrestlemania X-7, a really good Strap Match with Savio Vega, or Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at Survivor Series in November 17, 1996. Nonethless, I was quite satisfied with the product and the matches. I thought there needed to be a little more inside information, more information, period, about what was going on behind the scenes. This seemed more like a joy ride through the Stone Cold Experience then a serious look at it and what effect it had on the business, on the WWE, and can there ever be another golden period like the one they had with him and The Rock on top. I’m giving this a 6 out of 10 stars, and I think if you have seen most of these matches then you’re not really missing anything. This just seemed like a collection of matches then the “legacy” of Steve Austin.

John Cena SUN article

I saw this article link posted on another forum. I thought it was pretty cool. I hope it is ok to poste it here. I copied and pasted the article and added the link.

WRESTLING superstar John Cena has blasted former WWE champion The Rock for turning his back on the business.

Cena, who has managed to combine acting and grappling, feels that Rocky has betrayed his fans by concentrating solely on Hollywood.

Rock will make a one-off appearance at this year’s WWE Hall Of Fame ceremony to induct his dad and granddad, but John told us: “He is a genuinely nice guy and a fantastic human being.

“What I kind of get peeved about, and this is my Achilles heel, is that I’ve wanted to do this my whole life.

“Rock falls into that category. At one point he loved wrestling and wanted to do this all his life.

“So explain to me why he can’t come back.

“Simply put it’s because he wants to be an actor and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s very good and very successful. Associating with sports entertainment doesn’t do much for his acting career. I get it.

“Just don’t f*** me around and tell me that you love this.

“That’s the only thing that gets me really p***ed off.

“Our fan base have so much admiration for him, he’s got to respect that. He doesn’t give anything back.”

The ‘proper’ wrestling fans who boo him - “They pay good money to do whatever the hell they want. I don’t care what I hear, as long as it’s noise. If you wanna tell me to go to hell, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop believing in what I believe in.

“It’s not that I don’t care that those guys and girls say I can’t wrestle, I’m just glad that they’re watching and analysing my stuff so much that I’m under the microscope.

“All I can do, and all anyone can ask of me, is to go out every night and give everything I’ve got.”

The key to success in wrestling - “At the end of the day it’s not if you can do a majistral cradle or a 450 reverse double plancha dive. It’s do I give a s*** about this guy or not?”

Wrestlers who take steroids claiming it’s for ‘testosterone replacement therapy’ - “Maybe somebody who’s become anaemic, or is terminally ill, is the only person who I would suggest needs that. I don’t buy or believe any of that.

“Any time somebody is busted in our system it’s a 30 day suspension. You know what it should be? Call the authorities and have somebody f***ing go to jail.”

John also talks in-depth about how close the WWE were to firing him before his rapper gimmick took off, the wrestlers he loved growing up, Great Khali’s strengths and weaknesses and how he has become the first reverse second generation athlete ever.

His thoughts on The Rock?

His thoughts on the fans and the business?

His thoughts on steroids?

WWE RAW 2/25/08

Highlights of last weeks Cena vs. Orton with HHH as the special referee. Cena hits the FU for a trip to Wrestlemania… PEDIGREE! On Cena! PEDIGREE! On Orton!

“The sign of things to come.”
-Jim Ross; WWE RAW 2/25/08

Regal comes out for a “photo opportunity” with all three men in the ring. An interesting way to start off the show with no music or fanfare.

Cena goes first and gets lots of boos. He thanks HHH and Orton. WTF? Says he has a problem with somebody. He gets in HHH’s face but not in the way he should. HHH says he did what was right. he wants Cena in the ring. HHH gets the best promos. People cheer the Pedigree. HHH is burying Cena here. Orton’s in the backdrop, looking like he’s totally not in the picture here. Cena says HHH tapped out to him once before. They face off but Randy butts in. No one wants him there, it seems, not the fans, not me, believe it or not. Randy isn’t even in focus. His promo doesn’t really get over. His promo isn’t half as good as HHH’s. They dismiss him quickly. HHH and Cena go at it. HHH was getting the best of Cena but RKO’s for everyone! Randy poses in the ring with the belt as the fans chant “You suck!”. Poor Randy.

Orton walking backstage runs into Kennedy. He says he will win MITB at Wrestlemania. Good segment.

Santino Marella & Carlito w/ Maria vs. Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes (c):
Ross says opposites attract, like Holly and Rhodes. Just say this tag team has been a failure, Jim. Santino and Rhoades kick it off. Nice STO by Marella on Rhodes as the heels tak over. Carlito in there on fire. Then a rear chinlock by carlito, slowing things down. Nice reverse neck breaker on Cody. Marella tags in and they keep the heat on Cody until he turns a punch into a Russian legsweep. Holly is on and he cleans house a little. He does his patented kick on Carlito. Lawler keeps trying to call Maria to the announce table. Marella gets distracted and eats an Alabama Slam. Holly and Cody are your winners. Big whoop. So they tease Lawler/Marella AGAIN?

Show quick highlights of Mayweather vs. Show press conference, coming up next. 3-1 odds ESPN was not there.

RAW re-cap of last week with Show and Mayweather, plus the No Way Out PPV. Good press conference, very professional. It’s official, Mayweather vs. Big Show at Wrestlemania.

Regal is in the back with Grisham to make a match for the main event. Kennedy & Orton vs. HHH & John Cena. Jericho pops into the room. Cockatoo hair! Jericho wants a MITB spot. Regal gives him a qualifier match against… Jeff Hardy!?

Jeff Hardy vs. Chris Jericho: Why would anyone care about this match except if they pull out all the stops? Its a little sloppy at first but there’s enough energy in the building to keep it interesting. The commercial break almost helps I think. They come back to have a good match with some nearfalls, trademark moves, reversals, and the finish which sees Jericho go over. Don’t feel like Hardy lost anything of his heat here, it just was innevitable that Jericho was going to MITB and they needed Hardy to put in his time, get a good match our of Chris, and build a little tension between the two men… which will be quickly forgotten… umm… what was I talking about?

Clips of Hornswoggle’s destruction last week. VKM will make a formal apology next.

Vince McMahon comes out next in a nice suit. He wants to apologize and he does, then says that someone else owes Hornswoggle an apology as well. JBL comes out. He looks like a scolded dog. VKM wants an apology, NOW! JBL drops a bombshell and says Hornswoggle isn’t his son, Hornswoggle is Finlay’s son. And that this lie, this ruse, came straight from the top of the McMahon family. This is ridiculous that Finlay would be Horny’s son. This is silly. But, if it was Linda McMahon, that would be gold. But I dunno where it would go from there. But this is silly. I guess it leaves some questions they can build off of for the coming weeks and the PPV.

Cena and HHH backstage, with Trips doing all the talking. HHH is totally cool. Ha ha! Extra bottle of water! Cena’s threats seem hollow to me. The crowd goes “ooooh”! The big fight will be in the playground after school.

Umaga vs. DH Smith: Nice kick by Umaga takes Smith over the top. Umaga vs. Smith as a feud would be cool. Even if DH loses it would be good for both guys IMO. Big splash by Umaga off the top rope and I thought it was gonna be a squash match… and I was right. Samoan spike to the throat and Umaga wins.

Regal, Burchill, and Katie Lea are in the back. Vickie Guerrero sent a letter about something like SD! being better then RAW. Regal wants to send “UmaNga” to represent RAW. Katie Lea Burchill talks Regal into sending “The Ripper” Paul Burchill to SD! Regal wants proof. Probably a match coming up next for Paul Burchill. Burchill intimates that if Regal wants, he can bang his sister. NICE! Katie Lea looks good. Better then when I saw her on OVW, and she seemed to have good mic skills too in the seg. Sexy mama!

HBK vs. Lance Cade: They played HBK introducing Flair from last week and mention the Hall of Fame induction. Is Flair gonna run in on this when Murdoch interferes? Bread and butter match before Murdoch runs in but HBK cleans house and wins by DQ. THEN the Nature Boy comes out. HBK kneels and bows to the Man. Flair says he wants HBK at Wrestlemania. HBK says he doesn’t want to end Flair’s career. Flair says “is that a given?”, and I thought they were going for something there but they didn’t, pussied out, and HBK vs. Flair is on for Wrestlemania without any serious storyline… for now.

Shaquille O’Neal weighs in on Mayweather vs. Show and he picks Mayweather. Good segment.

High Cheif Peter Maivia is named to be inducted to the Hall of Fame. Rocky Johnson as well. The Rock will be inducting his grandpa and his poppa. Rocky Johnson has not aged well.

Maria and the Playboy shoot seg. Cover unveiling next week.

Randy Orton & Mr. Kennedy vs. HHH & John Cena:
In seconds Cena and HHH clear the ring and face off as we go to commercial. Gimme a break! They come back and it’s the HHH and Cena show, not that it isn’t entertaining. Kennedy took the bumps to start but he tags Orton in on the Cena/HHH shenanigans and does the Garvin Stomp for a two count. Kennedy comes back in and scores the face wash boot on HHH. Orton tags in and slaps on the Headlock of Orton. It’s like the Wand of Orcus only not as deadly or “blingy”. Deadly to your attention span. Orton hits the elevated DDT on HHH. Isn’t Trips such a considerate, generous man to allow these two to get some offense on him? Looking for the hot tag to Cena, Orton cuts HHH off and hits his patented backbreaker. Trips counters the RKO, hot tag to Cena. Good flurry by Cena followed by the Blue Thunder Bomb and the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Looking for FU, Orton breaks it up and we end up with Cena reversing Kennedy’s finisher into the STFU. Face off now with Cena and HHH. Kennedy gets in the Mic Check on Cena as HHH watches. Now is he gonna Pedigree the Professor of Thuganomics? And why does the show go off with Kennedy’s music?

WWE ECW 2/19/08

Kofi Kingston vs. Jason Riggs *
The Miz w/ John Morrison vs. Colin Delaney w/ Tommy Dreamer 1/2*
Stevie Richards vs. James Curtis *
Ric Flair & CM Punk vs. Shelton Benjamin & Elijah Burke ***

Nuff’ said. Thumbs in the middle because of Flair. That Flair stuff was great, as were Burke and Benjamin bumping all over the place for The Nature Boy. WHOOO!

WWE “No WAY Out 2008″

Chavo Guerrero (c) vs. CM Punk

I am a big Chavo fan. I think he is starting to deliver on his talent both in the ring and his ability to make a match important. He would definitely be a guy who could make some people a good career with, like CM Punk, Koffi Kingston, or Elijah Burke. They had a good WWE-style match and then the finish gave it the little special oomph at the end. ***

Smackdown Elimination Chamber:
Batista vs. The Undertaker vs. Big Daddy V. vs. The Great Kahli vs. MVP vs. Finlay

Better then I expected. They let Finlay hit some big moves and I liked that. Undertaker was good but I thought he had to carry the match with Batista being immobile, plus Big Daddy V’s “lack of dexterity”, so Undertaker sold way too much for me. But wow, he was good anyway. Big Daddy V pretty much up and flopped all over this match. Otherwise I thought everyone was great and it had a good pace. Bad Khali! Bad! Oh man, why do I want Khali to be decent?! MVP was GREAT with his use of the bling! That was straight out of John Cena’s heel playbook when he was bone-thuggin’, and MVP did a big spot with the Undertaker as well. Good finish too! Hornswoggle makes his appearence in this match as well. Why was Kane not in this match, but Big Daddy V? ***1/4

Ric Flair vs. Mr. Kennedy - Win or Retire Match

They ruined the Flair thing, man… wow. Flair should have had matches like this and run through the entire roster to build to a Wrestlemania pay-off and a great finish to a great career. I liked this match although Kennedy could have done something more to shine. He was just kinda there, acted like a dick, but didn’t bust out anything spectacular. **3/4

Edge (c) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

Wow, one month after the crowd at MSG booed Rey Rey, even I’m getting sick of seeing this match. To bad Vickie Guerrero isn’t there, she is on a tear, for her. I don’t want to boo Rey, I just wish he’d get new matches with new opponents. A long run between Undertaker and Edge through the last 3 months would have had more heat going into Wrestlemania then Undertaker vs. Edge cold. But only Rey could take the loss after loss thatEdge has to dole out. So why give the title to the Undertaker if Edge is the best heel in the company right now? Rey couldn’t go and they went to a fast finish where there really wasn’t even a hint of Rey getting a win here. **

This leads to:

Big Show & Floyd Mayweather segment:

Big Show returns, turns heel because Rey is still on the outside and Mayweather jumps in the ring. One of the best celebrity spots ever. Shane-O-mac comes out to stop Big Show from chasing Mayweather and his posse.

Randy Orton (c) vs. John Cena

I don’t think these two can really work an excellent match. Randy’s style is monotonous and VERY WWE’ish. Cena has his bouts with unathleticism. I didn’t like the match much at all because it never clomaxed for me or got to that one point where I thought it was any good at all. The ending was even worse. **3/4

Elimination Chamber for RAW: Triple H vs. HBK vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Umaga vs. JBL vs. Chris Jericho

Worse then I expected. The SD! match was a bit better. HBK bled out of nowhere, enough so that they showed an clip of jericho and HBK slamming into each other because it made no sense for the guy to have a busted head at that point. Some decent stuff from Umaga who made the match much better. Everyone contributed, even JBL… AFTER getting his ass eliminated. But I was hoping this would be Jeff Hardy’s night and it wasn’t. No big cage spots either. ***
